Psalm 119 – Zayin

Never forget Your promises to me your servant, for they are my only hope. They give me strength in all my troubles; how they refresh and revive me! Proud men hold me in contempt for obedience to God, but I stand unmoved. From my earliest youth I have tried to obey You; Your Word has been my comfort. I am very angry with those who spurn Your commands. For these laws of Yours have been my source of joy and singing through all these years of my earthly pilgrimage. Psalm 119:49-56 (The Living Bible)

God’s promises to Believers are a blessing which sustains us through life. Psalm 119 – zayin, embodies this concept. There are three meanings of ז: crown, sword and sustain. We can look at Psalm 119 - Zayinthe crown, and remember that it is only God that provides everything for us. According to Raskin (2003), ז reminds us to meditate on God and how it is He who provides for us, and not our own abilities. Since ז also represents the number 7, it helps us remember to stop working on the seventh day of the week, the Sabbath, and focus on God. The sword of the ז is a weapon. The best weapon we have comes when we realize all that God has given us. It is His blessings that are the weapon that overcomes the evil that arises when we think it is by our own might that we have been blessed. Finally, it is God’s precepts that sustain us through our journey through life on earth.

The Psalmist asks God to never forget His promises to him. It is these promises that give him hope. I know that I wouldn’t be able to endure life’s tough times without the hope God gives us through His promises. He promises to:

Protect us – Psalm 91
Provide for us – Matthew 6:31-33
Comfort us – II Corinthians 1:3
Hear us – Psalm 65:2
Love us – I John 4:7
(For a complete list, read the Bible.)

I finish this blog with Reliant K’s song, For the Moment I Feel Faint. This song echoes what the Psalmist wrote in the ז section of Psalm 119 – God is our hope. We need to hold on to Him and His Son Jesus, no matter what the hardships we are facing. God the Father, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit have all of our backs – we just need to hold on tight to Them.
